Inside vs. Outside Mount: Which One is Right for You?

When ordering your blinds, one key decision is whether to choose an inside mount or an outside mount.

Both options look great and function the same, but each offers a different style and fit. An inside mount sits fully inside the window frame in an "L" shape in each of the window's corners. While an outside mount also attaches to the window frame, but on the outside of the window frame.

The best choice depends on your window depth, frame style, and personal preference. Not sure which to pick? We’ll walk you through the benefits and considerations of each below so you can make the perfect choice for your space!

Inside Mount

A sleek, built-in look—designed to fit perfectly within your window frame for a seamless style

Outside Mount

Perfect for when when the window frame is too narrow for other options, while ensuring full functionality of your windows or doors

Compare Options

Inside Mount
Outside Mount
Required Window Frame Depth 1 inch No minimum depth, so perfect for window frames that are shallow, have interior window lattice or have rounded, narrow edges.
Mount Colors Clear White or Black
Aesthetic Preferences Attach fully within each of the four corners window frame like an "L" so it provides a clean look that isn't visible to most people Attach to the front face of the window frame in all 4 corners. Although the mounts are visible, they integrate seamlessly when selected to match the color of the window frame.
Light Control & Privacy Window size deducations are needed to accomodate the mount, so this mount allows some light to filter around the edges, which may not be ideal for total blackout needs. Blinds are able to be closer to the window edge because the mount width doesn't have to be accomodated.
Installation & Coverage Requires very precise measurements. While exact measurements are still required, outside mounts provide more flexibility because the mounts can be attached at slightly adjusted points of the window frame to accommodate the specific blind size.
Measurement Deductions When Ordering 6/16 inch or .4 inch 1/4 inch
